ECLIPSE
CONCEPT BRIEF
In Ancient Egypt an eclipse meant the evil serpent Opep had caught up to Ra consuming the sun. However ultimately Ra would end up winning in the in the end reclaiming the sun.
For this piece I thought it be interesting to depict a world where Opep had won in that battle. what would that look like, and what would that look like to an Ancient Egyptian. As a result I Settled on the idea of a broken statue of Ra under the Eclipse.
This idea came with two unique challenges to overcome Eclipse lighting and a sun god statue readable to non expert in the subject. My solutions to the eclipse lighting was to exaggerate the red ring glow. This was done because a real eclipse would make a night time scene, and I thought that would look to calm for the story. deep red lighting gave off more of a feeling of death in the air, enhancing the story. As for second challenge my solution was to have the broken statue pointed towards the eclipse, and have a gold eye similar scale to the eclipse. this was done to create simple connection between the two suns. Also because the sun disk on Ra head is a more subtle element. If the disk was more prominent I feel it would take more then it would add to the composition.
As for the design of the Ra Statue it self I looked egyptian Statue artifacts, as a stating point then added details in line with falcons native to Egypt. this was done because the statue is major element to the composition and would nice to see more detail and character.
